Eighteen resistance medics attending a Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF) training course were killed by flooding in Demoso Township, Karenni (Kayah) State, according to the anti-regime group.

The medics were swept away during a river crossing exercise, the KNDF said on Friday.

The medics were members of the KNDF, People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) and other resistance groups from southern Shan State.

“They were swept away by floods while trying to help each other. We found the 18 bodies,” a rescue member told The Irrawaddy.

The KNDF said it would investigate the incident and make the findings public.

Over 70 tents at five displacement camps in Demoso Township have been swept away since Typhoon Yagi made landfall in Vietnam.

Ten tents were reportedly swept away at a camp in Thandaung Township, northern Karen State.

Tun Myanmar Donation, a group aiding displaced Karenni residents, said on Thursday that three people were killed and 25 houses destroyed by flooding in Pekon Township.

Almost half of Myanmar’s states and regions have reported severe flooding since Tuesday.

Around 400 civilians have been killed by the flooding, according to media reports. The regime said around 235,000 people had been displaced by flooding.
