An American Airways flight to London from Miami rotated about an hour into its journey on Wednesday evening due to a passenger who refused to put on a masks, the airline mentioned.
Law enforcement officials met Flight AAL38 at Miami Worldwide Airport when it returned, and escorted a lady in her 40s off the aircraft, mentioned Lea Gonzalez, a public data officer for the Miami-Dade Police Division. She was not arrested, Ms. Gonzalez mentioned.
The Boeing 777, carrying 129 passengers and 14 crew members, was about 500 miles into its 4,400-mile flight when it reversed course off the coast of North Carolina, flight trackers present.
American Airways mentioned in a press release that the flight had been diverted due to “a disruptive buyer refusing to adjust to the federal masks requirement.”
The episode was one other in an extended listing of midair masks disputes which have erupted through the pandemic.
In October, a passenger was accused of punching an American Airways flight attendant in her nose, giving her a concussion, after a masks dispute. The airline’s chief govt referred to as the violent encounter on the California-bound flight from New York “one of many worst shows of unruly habits we’ve ever witnessed.”
In Might, a California lady on a Southwest Airlines flight repeatedly punched a flight attendant, bloodying her face and chipping three enamel, after she was requested to buckle her seatbelt, put up her tray desk and “put on her face masks correctly.”
Hundreds of different episodes involving unruly passengers have taken place lately, in keeping with the Federal Aviation Administration. As of Tuesday, the company mentioned, it had obtained 151 experiences of unruly passengers, 92 associated to face masks, since Jan. 1. Final 12 months, it obtained 5,981 experiences of unruly passengers and 4,290 mask-related incidents.
